Let’s start of with that I am a Mac user, not because I chose a Mac, however, the software I wanted to run was only available on the Mac.
Yet over the years I have saved so much time, being Mac based rather than PC.
Possible one of the greatest things about the OS, macOS as its now called, is that when a new version is introduced, the UI, interface, remains the same.
Sure, extra features seem to appear sometimes, yet the main user interface has not changed in all that time.
Yes, icons have changes, items refined – but one does not need to relearn their OS every time the developer makes a change.Unlike with Windows, where one is faced with the challenge of learning how Microsoft has redesigned their OS, Apple has looked the same, with refinements, since my first Mac, back in 2007.

All the basic included applications, Pages, Numbers and Keynote replace the Microsoft threesome and are included free with your Mac.
Not going to argue what one I believe to be the best.
All I know is that when faced with a blank page in any of the Apple ones, its the content that one focuses on, not all the buttons or sub-menus to find features.
But I digress.


 

Davinci Resolve

I have been video editing for almost 20 years.
I started off with Sony Camcorders with those little tapes, which required capturing at realtime.
As I have always been a fan of Adobe products, I started of with early version of Premiere.
And I took many a tape, edited it down, added some music – and was happy.

My interest then became photography, as I was after a new hobby that was technical and also offered me the chance to be creative.
I spent three years working hard at becoming good.
The end result was being asked, by the bride, to take the Wedding Photos of someone whom used to call me friend.

As someone whom has made a career out of turning hobbies into work, I was always clear I wasn’t going to do this with photography.
Sure enough, doing one wedding provide to me – Keep This Your Own Hobby / Not For Revenue.
Then, when the Mental Health Journey began, I had to get rid of all my awesome Nikon equipment.

And so I started making a video history of this might, epic journey that I was on.
I used any of the Apple products I had – from phones to laptops to iPad Pros.

And then I found out about Blackmagic Cameras.
And what they could do.
Which allowed me to start playing, properly.

With the purchase of my first Blackmagic Cinema Camera, I started filming properly.
Which is not like photography.
The composition of shots is different, which is the main point.
There is also the (complication?) of light – something fixed with a flash when taking a photo.

As well as having to learn to shoot correctly, I had to use the NLE software that the camera manufacture also made.
And so I began to edit on Davinci Resolve.

 

To begin with, Resolve focused primarily on the Colouration and Grading of the footage.

So good at this, it turns out that Hollywood uses it.
And then they focused on the other tools.
Which was cool, as it meant I no longer needed to use Final Cut Pro.

I fell in love with Resolve.
Sure, I had strong feelings for Premier, yet nothing like I have for Resolve.

I have always said that my favourite software is Photoshop.
I started out on Version 1 and have used it constantly.
However, my new favourite is quite easily Resolve.

Why?
I am not sure.
I just love the look, feel and the way one uses it.
Plus Blackmagic keep finding ways to make it better.

The jump from version 12.5 to 15 gave me a proper NLE.
Now I can stay in just one editor, not having to round trip to something else.

There is a but.
I am still using Apple Motion for things like titles.
Resolve have their own CGI engine, Fusion.
It is only now that I am able to considering how to learn this, meaning I can remove Motion – and do everything in one piece of software.

Its taken quite a while to get used / comfortable living inside Resolve.
So long that now I am, almost, up to speed, Resolve is about to take version 16 from Beta to GM.
All I know about it so far, is that the manual has ended up with around another 1000 pages!

Good job I love a read of a manual.


Devonthink Office Pro

This software is a database that I can send anything to – knowing that I can find it again.
It even has OCR built in, allowing me to scan any paperwork.
It then makes the document searchable.
It syncs across iCloud, allowing me to access the info from my iPhone.
And its final had an upgrading, going from Version 2 to 3.
What the under the hood changes are, I’ve not got too.
I’m still smitten with the subtle redesigned interface.
This software was one of the core reasons to switch too Mac.
I have wanted/needed the equivalent to a global file cabinet since becoming a computer user.
And this is what Devonthink delivers.


Curio

This is an all in one notebook, come organiser, complete with tasks and status.
It lets you add a plethora of things like Mind-maps, Notecards, Lists and can even import PDFs.
One can have the PDFs pages spread out across separate workspaces, allowing one to make notes on a separate page.
Again, the use for it huge.
I tend to make mind-maps, I love the interconnectivity of them.
Being able to link one to another allows one to have an overview map, linked to numerous sub-maps.
I just wish the tasks and status elements where different.
How, I am not sure.
What I am sure is that I do not make use of them, however, that might be because I am hyper-obsessive about my To-Do software(s).

 


Scrivener

Next up, is the software I use for my book.
Again, this is one of those reasons I am Mac based.
There might be a Windows version available now, however, its relatively new compared to how long the Mac version has been out there.

It’s been designed from the ground up to enable one to write a book.
Sure, it has a huge host of features.
However, once again, it’s how the software, like all good Mac software, disappears into the background, enabling one to focus on what on is doing, rather than with what one is doing it with.

I have over 600 pages written in it, and that is for my auto-biography.
I have started my screenplay in it, too.
There is the ability to show a cork board with cards on it, summarising the chunk of writing.
This makes it perfect for screenplays, as one is supposed to start with making a card for each scene.
Only when all the scenes are created is one supposed to start on the actual dialogue.
Even to the point that if one thinks of an amazing line, or even a speech, one is supposed to just forget it, if the scenes haven’t been done.
Good job that at all times, the rule of movie making is, making something worth watching – rather than follow a process to the letter.

 


FSNotes

I am trying out a new central note taking app, called FSNotes.
All I am after is a simple interface, the ability to create folders and store it all on iCloud.
I was using Ulysses, however, when they changed their business model they lost me as a customer.
Plus I got what everyone was raving about, it just didn’t seem that amazing to me.
It seems that FSNotes does it all, and I get on better with the user interface than I did with Ulysses.
It even supports Markdown, with a Preview ability to see the text rendered.
I do wish that one could work on the Preview version, without have to go back to the raw Markdown.


Merlin Project 5

Guess that just leaves the To-Do software to talk about.
The one genre of software that has become somewhat of an obsession with me.
Trying out every one that I can get my hands on.
Not knowing what I am after, just always feeling that what is offered doesn’t quite do it.

Which led me to deciding upon using the Omnigroups programmes.
Sure, they might not be what I want, however, OmniFocus and OmniPlan offering everyone one could need – IF they were both in one programme.
I can never decided which programme to put somethings in.
Which means some things can end up in both programmes.
Not really what I call good organisation.

And then I discovered Merlin Project – and all my answers where found.
I can have the long term goals that Onmiplan offers, whilst also being able to assign a list to a task – combining in OmniFocus.
Not only can one add task, but also attachments, notes and other things.
And the icing on the cake is the interface.
It just works better than OmniPlan, for me.
Sure, I like the redesigned OmniFocus, however, it still seems to do things in a way that doesn’t work for me.
Which means I shall be investing time into Merlin, to learn what it can offer, as well as adding in the never ending list of things to do.
At least with the writing of this post I can take ONE thing off the list 😉
